How about:
error: Input file written for LilyPond version 2.1.23, this is version
2.2.0.
error: Use the convert-ly program to update the input file.
Is really the oldest_version variable updated regularly? Considering
the number of changes that convert-ly -s indicates between 2.1.25 and
2.2.0, it seems overly optimistic to claim that 2.2.0 can handle 2.1.25.

I just got this cryptic warning message from `lilypond':
error: Incorrect lilypond version: 2.1.23 (2.1.25, 2.2.0)
error: Consider updating the input with the convert-ly script
IMHO the first line is confusing for a normal user. This should
either be more verbose or replaced with a generic `too old' message.
