I was using 7.07.  I updated to 8.14, and got a bug even earlier in the
build process.

I went back to gs 7.07.  Then I created a GS_FONTPATH variable

GS_FONTPATH=/usr/share/fonts

After that, success!

Thanks for the help in localizing the problem to gs.
