you have no choice?

Well I effectively made a choice to use commerically available software many many years ago. No doubt the fact that I have done so has made it somewhat more difficult for me to explore certain alternatives. Certainly in the case of music software, I'm eager to be to rid of Encore, but until I can a) find a replacement that I really think is worth while changing to and b) completely reverse engineer the file format I'm not sure when that will ever happen. But in general I'm simply quite happy using commerical software (especially because I rarely have to pay for it myself!), and having dabbled with some of the alternatives, I see little incentive to change.

Whatever *my* reasons are for using a particular platform, it doesn't seem unreasonable to hope that other developers try their best to remain mindful of the possibility that not everyone works in the same environment they do. For a start, if we are truly concerned about ensuring the longevity of our code, then tieing yourself intricably to one platform seems rather shortsighted. The guile library in particular appears to be likely to need serious reworking to run on certain 64-bit platforms. 10 years ago, maybe 5, there was some excuse for not being too worried about 64-bit environments, but these days it's inexcusable - in 10 years 32-bit environments will be surely as relevant as 16-bit ones are today.
