I've committed support for resolving collisions via skylines to the jneeman git branch. In order to use this feature, you just do

\override <GrobName> #'outside-staff-priority = #<number>

and all grobs of that type will be moved away from the staff in order to avoid collisions. Grobs with a smaller priority will be positioned first (so they will be closer to the staff).

The previous warning about lack of testing still applies.
