Something like this should be into the reference documentation...

Maybe something like this, taken from Joe's explanation?

=== BEGIN ===

Notes.

The VerticalAlignment and VerticalAxisGroup grobs work together.
VerticalAxisGroup groups together different grobs like Staff, Lyrics,
etc. VerticalAlignment then vertically aligns the different grobs
grouped together by VerticalAxisGroup. There is usually only one
VerticalAlignment per score but every Staff, Lyrics, etc. has its own
VerticalAxisGroup.

=== END ===

But the question is where to put such an explanation.

I would very much like it to go in the reference manual pages for both
the VerticalAlignment and VerticalAxisGroup grobs at ...

http://lilypond.org/doc/v2.11/Documentation/user/lilypond-internals/VerticalAlignment#VerticalAlignment

... and ...

http://lilypond.org/doc/v2.11/Documentation/user/lilypond-internals/VerticalAxisGroup#VerticalAxisGroup

... respectively. And it seems like the right place in both cases
would be immediately after the primary attribute listing and
immediately before the section on interface subscription.

However, is it still the case that the reference pages are produce
automatically by snarfing the source?

If so, how can we add by-hand authorial comments to the ref pages?
