Hi,
Last week I had the opportunity to talk about LilyPond in
conjunction with my music as part of a presentation I gave at
University College Cork (UCC) in Cork, Ireland.
That's absolutely awesome. I keep in touch with some of the
composition students in my undergrad, and now that I understand the
program a bit better, I evangelise constantly to them about how much
better it is than sibelius.
* "Why can't I type \new staff { } instead of \new Staff { } or
\new voice { } instead of \new Voice { }? Note names don't have to
be capitalized so why do I have to capitalize Staff?" (Which made
me realize just how carefully I need to watch the details when
working with new users and also that I probably needed a better
terminal font to help distinguish lower- and uppercase characters
on the projector).
To someone who's never typed a line of code in their (barring LOGO,
when he was much younger) this is an extremely important distinction.
My first question to the user list was a confusion I had between
\clef and /clef and c"8 and c''8. It's in the documentation, much
better and prominent than it was 3 years ago when I started with
lilypond, but it's so important that people new to code be explained
the right and wrong ways of writing code.
* "Do you personally think the lack of GUI is a weakness of the
program or a strength?" (Answer: a strength, for me anyway.)
Neither. It is what it is.
