The oldest example i can think of is first ballad op. 23 by chopin, so
maybe there is a typesetting tradition around this one, there must have
been dozens of editions of that yet... otherwise i remember lots of
contemporary scores looking similar to the quoted lsr example

This issue has been discussed on the mailing lists several times over
the years. The first question is what layout such a feature would use.
One option is shown in http://lsr.dsi.unimi.it/LSR/Item?id=505, but I
guess there's no single established typesetting practice for these
situations.
