After extensively discussing the relative merits of this approach and
variants with myself, I decided to push it as presented.  I plan to
rework some stuff in the overall music function area and to improve the
documentation, and there is little point in doing all this loosely
related work in a single patch.  That would only make it harder to track
things.

Maybe this counts as abuse of my push privileges but I guess it saves
everyone work.
