GUB can't build fonts

I see a ton of errors like this:

I see this recently in git:

Could we not do this?  At least until the end of this month?
I mean, I doubt that we *actually* want to force the use of the
system perl instead of the ./configure perl, but even if you do,
please make that change later.

(insert complaint about my desktop being 7000km away, hidden
behind 2 separate ssh servers, and altogether a real pain to do
anything GUB-ish with it.  Don't worry; my social life and limited
computing power will come to an end in 2 weeks)
