Why, if it's a length?

Exactly.  That's why it's easy to understand.  It
conveys exactly the same meaning as 'height, 'width
and 'thickness.  They're all dimensions.  I don't 
recall 'length ever causing any user confusion.

This seems awfully close to reinstating 'stem-end-position
and 'stem-begin-position.
