I will give you some starting points, but not much more for today. But I
think these should be rather simple to follow.
* First you should find resources in the LibreOffice domain on how
extensions can be written.
* Second you should find specific resources for *Python* extensions.
They have a nice demo extension available.
* Just yesterday the release of version 0.5.0 of the "old" extension
has been announced here:

o Install this in LibreOffice to get an idea what the extension
does and looks like
o Look at the current code
* Have a look at python-ly (http://python-ly.readthedocs.io/en/latest/)
This is the Python library that powers Frescobaldi's text editing
component, and we can integrate it into the new Python LibreOffice
extension. The most obvious option is to use it to produce syntax
highlighting, but there are seemingly endless options for future
enhancements.
