There's primitive support for setting fingerings 
left or right of the note head, see the example file
input/test/script-horizontal.ly.

The best one so far is the tutorial part of the user's manual.
Please tell us what you find confusing, or even better, improve
the text yourself. See also the mail earlier today on this list
by Han-Wen.

A good source of information is the large collection of 
example files in /input/test/ and input/regression/. 
If you want an overview of different features, take a look
in the regression-test document on the web page.
