This looks like a bug.  At least nothing helps and I'm desperate.  ;-)
Trust me, I've played around a bit, too.

This doesn't help.

For some reason, this does indeed help.  Thanks!

I get two of these warnings per rest, though:

/Users/arvidg/musikk/Grieg/Album_for_mandssang/4_Kvalins_halling.ly:168:25:

I've put the worked-around files up as [3] and [4] in case anyone
wants to, ehm, compare and contrast.  Or something.
