Strange trouble -- current CVS

I'm having a couple of strange things happen with current CVS Lilypond. 
I'm now running 2.3.17 ChangeLog 1.2611 and getting this:

Runaway argument?

Also, I'm getting complaints when using a '&' in \markup texts.  I did
not have either of these problems a couple of days ago.  If I have some
sort of syntax error in my input file I would expect to get some sort of
warning.  I'm getting nothing of the sort.  Furthermore, for some
reason, the file I'm working on now only gets the first two pages
produced in output.  It should be four.  The last two pages simply
aren't there.

Help?
