what is/was in you ~/.fonts.conf?

`/usr/share/lilypond/2.6.0/fonts/type1//PFAPFAemmentaler-14.pfa.pfa' 

It is reading PFAemmentaler-20.pfa all right, but it fails on emmentaler-14.

On the XP test box, LilyPond includes the Vera font

    Layout output to 
`simple-song.ps'...[/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF/Vera.ttf][/usr/share/lilypond/2.6.0/fonts/type1/PFAemmentaler-20.pfa][/usr/share/lilypond/2.6.0/ps/music-drawing-routines.ps][/usr/share/lilypond/2.6.0/ps/lilyponddefs.ps]

    $ cyg-apt find /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF/Vera.ttf
    xorg-x11-fscl: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF/Vera.ttf

Can you check if you have the xorg-11-fscl package installed, and what
happens if you install it?

It almost seems as if PFAemmentaler-14.pfa is substituted as a default
font, which then fails.  Han-Wen?
