punctuation dash

Hello,

I've been trying to figure out how to use dashes as punctuation in Lilypond for
a while now (instead of a semi-colon or colon). I can put the dashes in, and
they show up, but it seems there must be a space before or after the dash in
order to make it so it's not counted as a single word.

I am using UTF-8 encoding. It just wants to count it as one word, or put a
space in there. Anyway, here is the dash character I'm using: — (u+2014 or
Alt+0151). I believe I tried the other dashes, also, with a similar result
(it's been a while since I tried the first time; this time, I just used this
dash).

It would be nice not to have to deal with lyric spacing on this, if there is
another way. Really, I just want a way to do it that will work the same way
every time (I tried using different spacing methods, but it was tedious, and
different for each instance—not to mention if I edited anything before it, I had
to start all over). Maybe I was just doing it wrong.

Anyway, thanks for any help you can give!
