Hi Kieren,
A TextSpanner is indeed what I needed. Thanks to everyone for the help.
This is what I have now:
\textSpannerUp
\override TextSpanner #'edge-text = #(cons (markup #:circle " " ) "")
\override TextSpanner #'dash-fraction = #'()
\override TextSpanner #'extra-offset = #'(0 . 0.5)
Usage:
<hh bd>8\startTextSpan[<hh bd>8] <hh sn>8[hh16 bd16] hh16[sn16 <hh bd>16 bd16]
<hh sn>8[hh16 sn16\stopTextSpan]
