Tom

When you introduce these temporary << \\ >> constructs you need
to consider in what voices the notes are going to placed. By default
the notes are placed in \voiceOne and \voiceTwo, which may not be
what you want, as you already have other notes in those voices at
this musical moment. Try explicitly using \voiceThree and \voiceFour
for the inner notes - they can be used in this construct to override
the default voices. The clashes will then be avoided automatically
and all the annoying messages about clashing note columns
will disappear. The sections to read in the Learning Manual are
3.2.1 and 3.2.2 (where the characteristics of \voiceOne etc are
described).

For bar 15, simply replacing \stemDown with \voiceFour, giving
 <<
   \voiceFour
   {< e-1 >2 < a-1 >4 g |} \\
   {< c,-2 a-4\6 >2 < d g,-2 >} |
 >>
resolves the conflict, but I don't know if this is the layout
you are seeking. I think you'll find force-hshift then works too,
if you want to make further adjustments.

Subject: horizontal shift of notes not working

I've gotten this to work fine, until now. It's not working at all. In the score code below, measure 15 is the problem. On the third beat, I need to shift either of the top two notes to the right. I've tried to shift both. Neither will budge a bit. In the score below I'm trying to shift the top note. It's not working.

Can someone tell me why?

Thanks, in advance...

t.
