Problem with volta alternatives and time signature

I have a strange issue with time signatures in alternatives:

 \time 9/8
 \repeat volta 2 
  { e8[ e b' e,] c'[ c b g g]  a[ a d a] f'[ f e c c] }  
    \alternative {  
       { \time 7/8 a[ a] bes a[ a] f[ f] }
       { \time 7/8 g[ a] g[  g] f  g[ g] }
    }

This results in the proper 7/8 time for the first ending, but the second is back
in 9/8.  What am I missing?
