Hi Ryan,

I tried that once when using the Bravura font:

http://lilypondblog.org/2014/02/feta-and-bravura/

Please take a look at the section "Missing Glyphs in Feta", number 3.
You can find the lilypond code to produce this in the attachment. It
requires the smufl support in openlilylib. Please ask again if it does
not compile for you.

However, the way it is done is really ugly: It only looks like clusters
but as you can see from the code, it is achieved by hiding the notes and
just showing the attachted markup. So the clusters you see are not music
but markup text put at the right place by hand.

I am confident that with some effort chords could actually be translated
into this representation. I could imagine some (after-line-breaking ?)
function changing the stencil to these markups. But I don't have the
skills and time to do so.

I hope that helps a little bit. And if anyone comes up with a <aes
des'>\makeCowellCluster implementation, I would be really excited.

Cheers,
Joram
