I'm no expert, but off-hand I would guess that the answer is the
same as writing PDF: yes, but you lose the more advanced features
of PostScript, which as things stand would lose you Lout's graph
and figure drawing packages. These rely on PostScript's symbol
tables, loops, ability to define symbols, etc.
It should be quite easy to add another back end to Lout, given that
there are three there already: PostScript, PDF, plain text. You
basically need to trawl through all the switch( BackEnd ) statements
and add another case.
On the politics of back ends, I'm neutral. PostScript is technically
the best, but if people need other back ends I'm not standing in the
way.
