  So - what does it take to make Lynx accept input from stdin?
  A few simple changes, one more option, or a complete new rewrite?

One more option; which requires justification.

  Is this a FAQ yet? ;-)

<I speak as a fool>

Yes this is a FAQ. Many benighted Un*x natives tend to ask this
question. There are two levels of answer:

        1. No, it doesn't do that; here's the workaround.
        Fote gave that answer in
        http://129.237.17.75/lynx-dev/9610/0931.html .

        2. No, we aren't interested in doing that;
        the minor improvement in the batch use of the program
        is not worth the effort; there are important things
        to work on.
