I assume he means a hit counter or odometer.
There are counters with text output but it requires
support by your provider.  I'm not sure of the details.

I actually asked this same question some months ago and someone
suggested using PHP, a facility for generating elaborate
footers to web pages that are all text based.
But I believe you would need permission/support from your provider to use it.
