Ummm. Depends. Posix, in its rationale, recognizes that some
use a path of the form: //<host>/<dir 1>/<dir 2>/ ...
Posix strongly deplores this convention, while accommodating
it by noting that the effect of a pathname which begins with
two slashes is implementation dependent.
(Perhaps this is the origin of the two slashes preceding the
host name in a URL.)
Bottom line: I wouldn't do it.
