LYNX-DEV problem compiling 2-8 on Irix 5.3

this is on an SGI machine running Irix 5.3.

i downloaded 2-8pre, read the installation file carefully,
edited  userdefs.h  &  lynx.cfg  carefully, comparing ditto for 2-7.

then i tried (1)  ./configure , which ran for  c 20 mins ,
continually asking me "File conftest.foo : remove yes/no[no]",
to which i answered (knowing nothing of what was expected)
with the default no (ie  Enter ), except for one point at which it got stuck
repeating alternately "conftest.vals: remove?" "conftest.vals: overwrite?",
which i finally ended with  ^c .
when it all ended, i tried  make  (as instructed) with no result:
no doubt because there was no  Makefile  in the directory.

so then i tried (2) the manual method, editing  Makefile.old  carefully,
then moving it to the main directory (renamed  Makefile ).
i entered  make sgi , which started working,
getting as far as the line  HTAccess.o ...  , then announced an error:
 cfe: Error: ../../Library/Implementation/HTAccess.c: 50:
  Cannot open file HTML.e[truncated]
 [ditto]: 61: [ditto] GridTe[truncated]
 Error code 1.

i'm just a user, not the sysadmin, but the system is generally well managed,
so things should be where they are supposed to be.
i had no problem compiling 2-7 a year ago.
i hope i didn't make some simple editing error.

anyone offer any help on (1) or (2)?
