lynx-dev problem with downloading?

Hello,

I logged into an FTP site using Lynx and used it to download
some programs.  (It's much nicer than the FTP interface)

Anyway, it appears that it downloaded the programs as text,
since I couldn't un-gzip them.  When I used normal FTP and
downloaded the same files, they installed fine.

I looked all over for a preference for downloading and couldn't find one?
Is there something I'm doing wrong?

I'm using NetBSD 1.3.1 for an operating system and I'm running
Lynx 2.7
