today lynx cookies are only stored in memory, and are lost when lynx terminates.
the work going on relating to persistent cookies in lynx will allow someone
to optionally save their cookies.
as to 'harm' caused by cookies - the harm is in terms of privacy. There
are sites which use cookies in relation to ads, allowing them to track
the actions taken and to try to present ads that match the actions being
taken. Some people are concerned about the data being gathered in this
manner, just as there are people concerned about the data being gathered
by stores on the basis of coupons redeemed, credit cards used, etc.
If one has strong concerns already about all the data available about
you on computers around the world and work against this effort, then they
are right to be concerned about cookies that gather similar data.
