and I work for a commericla Unix company which ships Lynx binaries to
its users.  I also am strongly in favor of everything possible being
runtime configurable.

If it's runtime configurable, then a SCO user, or a Debian Linux user,
or a DOS user who downloads one of the lynx-dev-built DOS distributions,
can change those features.  Otherwise you have to lead them through
compiling from source (potentially including: obtaining a compiler,
making it work, obtaining libraries, configuring other options they
haven't got a clue about, etc.)  In many cases it's much better for
someone to start from an existing, working binary, and just change an
option.
