the latest release is 2-8; volunteer developers are working on 2-8-1.
do you perhaps have 2-7-2, which is close to 2-8, but not the same?

i've just investigated, with the following result (2-8pre.2, UNIX):

  (1)  lynx -auth=angus:queenstown http://www.tnauk.org.uk/bbs/
  (2)  lynx -auth=rotary:ggreen http://www.tnauk.org.uk/bbs/
  (3)  lynx http://angus:address@hidden/bbs/
  (4)  lynx http://rotary:address@hidden/bbs/

(1) & (2) get to the directory without any problem;
(3) & (4) fail with a message `404 Not Found: document'
(omitting  bbs/  makes no difference).

interactively, entering  g  with URLs (1) & (2),
Lynx asks for username & password (like accessing Financial Times),
but with URLs (3) & (4) Lynx presents the 404 screen again.

there is no mention of adding formats (3) & (4) in 2-8-1dev CHANGES.
