That sounds like a problem with generating temporary files.

Lynx needs to have enough space to create temporary files for
creating those "menus".  If the LYNX_TEMP_SPACE or TMPDIR
environment variables or the default built into lynx point to
an invalid directory, lynx cannot create the auxiliary pages.
The same may happen if the specification is valid but a
temporary file cannot be written, for example because the
disk is full or read-only.

For non-Unix systems, especially DOS and Windows, the environment
variable names may be different (or additional ones may be checked).

It would help to know what version your friend is using, an on
what operating system.  And of course what changed between then
(when it worked) and now.
