it was quick because I wanted to get the ssl patch in before the end of
the weekend (I work on shorter things during the week).
I did a quick test-compile on SunOS (K&R) and its preprocessor does accept
the quoted literal. (The only other K&R compiler I have recent experience
with is for HPUX 9.x - probably should see if I can get to that machine,
but it's been moved).
