If I'm just muddying the waters feel free to ignore this, but
2.8.5dev2 seems to work fine.  That's on cygwin, with SSL.

Muddying, indeed.  After a little more investigation, it turns
out my caching proxy is apparently fixing up the URL in the
request.  Setting "no_proxy=*" in lynx.cfg lets me reproduce the
problem.

So, never mind ....
