PRE> is supposed to select a monospaced font. So, is an
en dash the same as an em dash in a monospaced font?
<<<<<<<<
Imagine the typewriter: the standard was that two hyphen-dashes (the Unicode
name) make an em-dash, and one makes a hyphen or a figure-dash. Here
there is no en-dash, and copyeditors, who are quite particular, use three
hyphen-dashes--but there is a standard list of substitutions, somehwere
on Unicode.org.

It is supposed to manifest itself only if the line wherin it is
at that word is overset. Otherwise it hides.
