While I have no idea how VMS lynx users did it, or if there are ways
to remap keys, ^E^E (control+e, control+e) in an edit field seems to
produce the same effect as ^Xe, spawning my external editor. That
said, this was tested on my Debian Linux box, but the same should
hopefully hold for you there on your VMS box.
