As already said, compressing already compressed data is almost
useless, so it will not be implemented in mldonkey. The only part of
the protocol that should probably be compressed is the transfer of
file descriptions, ie shared file lists and results of search
queries. If it is not that important for clients, it is very important
for servers (each time you download a file, the full list of shared
files with the new file has to be sent to the server! with 100 files,
it is 100kB, so imagine a 1000-clients server...).
