Actually, the overhead is pretty miniscule if you use the poll extension - 
it should only send you regular Client_stats messages unless you ask for 
anything else, which is pretty useful if you want to continuously stream 
the bandwidth usage somewhere. It's certainly more efficient than dealing 
with the telnet interface.
