In this case what you actually want to monitor is inetd. Here's an
example for monitor inetd and also checking the pop and imap services.

check inetd with pidfile /var/run/
 start program = "/etc/init.d/inetd start"
 stop program = "/etc/init.d/inetd stop"
 port 110 protocol pop
 port 143 protocol imap
 alert address@hidden
timeout if 2 restarts within 3 cycles
