sybase monitoring

I was hoping somebody out there had come up with a better way to monitor
Sybase from Monit.  I currently have Monit opening a connection to the port
but that is not thorough.  For example the port can be opened but Sybase
may still be recovering from the previous shutdown, so it will not respond
as expected.  This is just one example, I am sure there are others.  But
right off the bat, this example is causing me problems.  Because Monit
starts the Application server before the database server is ready.
