Thanks for your help.

The second problem I mentioned is still occurring and I would love to figure out what is wrong so that I can use init to start and keep monit up.

The first problem was actually not a problem at all, I thought it was reporting the total system memory, not the currently used system memory. It just happened to be almost exactly a gig when I looked at it so I interpreted it wrong.
