Using something to externally test the alert system once per day and
if no alert arrives, then something in the alert path is broken.
So Martin's response gives an excellent way to make sure alerts are
being generated (told you I was a neophyte, and I guess I keep on
finding out more cool things it does). For the full round trip
question that uses the monit feature Martin mentioned it would be
relatively easy to write a Perl script to read and parse the mail
generated by this periodic alert (and to take action if the dog
doesn't bark on cue). Let me know off list if you'd like more details.
