Thanks so much, the quick fix worked. I moved all of the files out of the 
current eventqueue basedir and it's all back to normal now. 
Problem resolved, back to monit!

I suspect that you use the statement "set eventqueue basedir / 
directory" someplace in your monitrc control file. This statement tell  
Monit to queue events it cannot send for some reason and try again  
later. And from the look of it Monit has queued a lot of messages.

As a quick fix I suggest that you first remove all queue messages [1]  
and if the problem persist remove the "set eventqueue.." statement  
from your control file which stops Monit from queueing messages.

Normally Monit should remove queued messages once sent and not resend  
them again and again so something is wrong. It would also be great if  
you could investigate your mail server log and check any error  
messages from Monit and also consult the Monit log file for any clues.

[1] Go to the directory pointed to by basedir and remove all files  
starting with a timestamp_servicename
