ChangeLog: 

* preferences.ui/Preferences.cpp: an option to enable/disable the
incremental workspace read functionality (this is only useful for
big or huge workspaces, so let people decide if they want it or
not)
* Inventory.h/cpp: use it here; get rid of readDirLevelsAhead (this should
be constant); fix the display of the root's label (workspace path), since
we now have a cdup item for the root item again
* NEWS: note some of the recent changes
