What you diff against doesn't matter so much, though if you have it
against mainline anyway, that's never going to be worse than one
against an older rev.

And send it to the mailing list -- that makes it easier to discuss the
design and implementation.  I'm curious to see what you've done, and
we should discuss, for instance, whether it would be possible to do
this sort of scanning automatically...
