Hmm, in an ideal world we'd probably have some generic workspace
access code that encapsulated this knowledge in one place, though.

That would be better, certainly, but I'm not sure it's limited to workspace access. For example, in various places we omit printing details of the root dir, presumably because it doesn't have a sensible name. Or at least we used to, I haven't been in the code that much recently and things could certainly have changed.
