Hm.. I'm unable to reproduce this issue on my virtual Gentoo 2008.0 box.

fwiw, I can see the same compile problem when configuring monotone with --disable-nls on (standard) debian lenny and fedora 10.

It turns out that this can be solved by updating our copy of gettext.h with a more recent version. If no one objects, I'm going to commit that.
