Which doesn't help if you want to do this remotely, because the netsync
protocol is not prepared for such a transport or how do you would
implement such a thing?

My guess is that it would be easier to do when we serve automate because
all you need to get contents of a specific revision is already there,
i.e. `au get_manifest` and `au get_file_of`. Then of course the client
which talks to such an automate would need to include the logic to do
the needed steps and actually build a file tree from the output of these
commands.
