There have been rumours about this for a while and I've been awaiting the 
November release of the APIs - they are now on

There's been some interesting media coverage, including the BBC last week. To 
give some context, this article in NY Times captures the "open alternative to 
facebook" aspect (i.e. the alliance of companies vs facebook, in the context of 
Microsoft's recent investment in facebook).
