Aha.  I had seen this once, but then couldn't reproduce it.
Thanks for reporting.

Please, consider the attached patch to fix it.

I've fixed it in a more economical way.

(In your patch, the "&& sofar != NULL" is superfluous --
there is no problem with freeing NULL.)

(When doing ^W xxx ^T ^C, nano leaks four bytes of memory,
but I don't understand why.)
