I couldn't find the original context for commit
5618189643f285d40f7c92048e59813512d86b48 but it apparently breaks something:

1. Run 'nano'. This creates a new file.
2. Type 'abcdef'.
3. Press *Ctrl-\* to enter search & replace mode.
4. Type 'abc' in the *Search (to replace)* bar and press *Enter*.
5. Type arbitrary text or nothing at all in the *Replace with* bar
   and press *Enter*.
6. Now the character sequence 'ab' is highlighted rather than 'abc'
before this commit. This is erroneous as 'ab' does not match 'abc'.

Thanks for taking care of it.
