hmm, got a stupid one but worth the try : 
        Is nuauth already started by init script ?
Try
        ps auxw  | grep nuauth 
to check.
nuauth -vvvvvvv does not do any check to see it a nuauth running as
daemon is here.

But this does not explain why NuFW connection is ready :(

First step should be a failure and I thus recommend you to stop all
daemons and run your own compiled version of NuFW:
        ./configure --sysconfdir=/etc/nufw20 --enable-debug ADDYOUROPTIONHERE
        make
        make install
And send us the debug messages.

An other useful information and test could be to strace the run of
nuauth -vvvvv to see which problem is causing the failure.
